The Northern Tapestry

Exploring the sagas and stories that link medieval Iceland, Scandinavia and the northern British Isles

Moncreiffe Hill, Perth

Moncreiffe Hill, just to the south of Perth, is home to two iron age hill forts. The highest of these, Moredun Top, is also the largest hilltop fort in the Tay estuary. Unsurprisingly its name comes from the Gaelic and Celtic words mòr (big) and dùn (fort).

Moredun Top Hill Fort

The second fort is known simply as Moncreiffe Hill Fort. Excavations of both took place between 2014-17. A free copy of the report can be downloaded at https://www.archaeopress.com/Archa…/Products/9781803276588

Towards Fife from Moncreiffe Hill Fort

While the forts date back to well over 2,000 years ago, it is likely that occupation continued into Pictish times.

In 728, during the Pictish civil war, a battle took place here, as related in my blog post https://northerntapestry.com/…/tearful-and-miserable…/

This started a sequence of battles which led to the eventual victory in that war of Onuist son of Uurguist.

Towards Kinnoull Hill and Perth from Moredun Top Hill Fort

A relatively leisurely walk up the hill leads not just to the forts but also to some spectacular views north to Perth and south to the ancient Pictish kingdom of Fife. You can even see a few Pictish symbols carved (much more recently!) onto some stones as part of a sculpture trail.
